Lake Starnberg, also known as Starnberger See, is a large lake located in southern Bavaria, Germany. It is situated approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Munich and is one of the most popular recreational areas in the region. The lake is named after the nearby town of Starnberg and covers an area of about 56 square kilometers, making it the fifth largest lake in Germany. Lake Starnberg is surrounded by picturesque towns and villages, as well as lush forests and rolling hills, making it a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and water sports. One of the most famous attractions on Lake Starnberg is the St. Heinrich Chapel, also known as King Ludwig's Chapel. This small chapel was built in honor of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who drowned in the lake under mysterious circumstances in 1886. The chapel is located on the western shore of the lake and offers stunning views of the water and the surrounding countryside.
