Antarctica is the southernmost continent on Earth and is the fifth-largest continent, covering an area of about 14 million square kilometers. It is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, with temperatures dropping as low as -90°C (-130°F) in some areas. The continent is mostly covered in ice, with an average thickness of about 1.6 kilometers. Antarctica is home to a variety of unique wildlife, including penguins, seals, whales, and seabirds. The continent also has a number of research stations operated by various countries for scientific research in fields such as climate change, geology, and biology. Antarctica is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, which was established in 1959 to promote international cooperation and peaceful scientific research on the continent. The treaty prohibits military activities, mineral mining, and nuclear testing, and designates Antarctica as a natural reserve dedicated to peace and science. Despite its harsh climate and remote location, Antarctica has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists and adventure-seekers in recent years. However, tourism is strictly regulated to minimize the impact on the fragile environment and wildlife.
