I drive 'classic' army trucks for a hobby and as anyone who does this knows, you must have ear protection while driving (and they don't come with radios). I've been doing something similar for years, and have a few comments for the nay-sayers here: *No, they aren't perfect noise cancellers, but they do allow you to hear something besides your thoughts and the rumble of the road. *The quality of the noise reduction depends on the grade of the ear-protectors you manage to 'liberate' or buy. *They are cheap, so if somebody comes along and 'liberates' them from you, you're not out the large $$ that a good set would cost you. *and last but not least, now finally maybe people will see your video and think I got the idea from you and quit looking at me like I'm nuts! m4a1auto, Having used both, I have to defend Tim on this. While it's true that noise cancelling headphones emit an inverse sound wave, they only work for steady frequencies. Great for airplanes, poor for blocking out everyday life. If you're a pilot, and need to hear normal chatter, you need noise cancelling headphones. For the rest of us, they're not really worth it.

making noise canceling headphones would be much more complicated than this video shows, involving soldering circuits taking the inputs from microphones and inverting the sound waves and then mixing those signals with the music signals coming in over the headphone cable. i have never done it and honestly don't know anyone who has (correct me if im wrong). not exactly a newbie DIY, you would be better off going to the store and picking up a $50 pair of sony noise canceling headphones.

there is a difference between noise isolating headphones (the ones made in this video) and noise canceling headphones. While these headphones may be good for some people, they are not doing the same thing as a pair of bose headphones. Also when u stuff a crappy pair of headphones in ear protection.... you still get crappy sound from your crappy headphones.
