It is glue holding the carpet to the bottom of the bullnose, I don't know what type of glue but it sure smelled like some kind of contact cement for carpets. You could staple it also using the same method thou, cut the carpet to suit the slide with the bullnose in place, remove the bullnose and staple carpet to the bottom and then flip the carpet over and stretch and cut into place. The original was also glued.
