If you look closely, you will see the stones change color partway up the monument. This is because the Monument began construction prior to the Civil War. During the War, Lincoln thought it inappropriate to dedicate the money and manpower to a monument that was to stand for America - while America was divided. Unfortunately, after the war ended the builders were unable to quarry the same color of marble so the upper portion is more white.
