POTD 05-26-07 Italian Water Garden at Longwood Gardens
idelsoni > albums > Longwood Gardens
Album Info:
The area that is now known as Longwood Gardens is the creation of Pierre duPont, former chairman of both General Motors and the duPont Corporation. The land was originally acquired by the Pierce family in the 1700s from William Penn. The Pierce family farmed the land and planted trees, turning it into a premier arboretum in the area, known as Pierce's Woods. In 1906, unable to afford the land anymore, the Pierce family decided to sell the arboretum so that the trees could be used for lumber. Not wanting this to happen, Pierre duPont purchased the land from the Pierce family. DuPont soon developed the land into what would become Longwood Gardens. He built a large indoor conservatory consisting of 20 indoor garden rooms, as well as a ball room complete with a pipe organ. He also constructed 3 large fountains on the grounds (Main Fountain, Italian Water Garden and the Outdoor Theatre), a bell tower with a carillon that chimes every hour, a topiary garden and many outdoor gardens. In 1937 the Longwood Foundation was created and in 1946 the foundation was chartered with running Longwood Gardens for the enjoyment of the general public. Pierre duPont died in 1954.

Awesome shot. Great timing for a bird to be captured amongst all.

Wow, Ira, this is amazing! No wonder it's the feature for today - huge congrats to you. Years ago I bought an inexpensive little Welsh pony mare that came in an auction lot from out West somewhere. I was astonished when I got her registration papers and discovered she had been bred by a member of the DuPont family (Mrs. Austin DuPont)who lived on another family estate called Liseter Hall. They all seem to have been wonderful stewards of the land. ~ Brenda

As soon as I saw it, I recognized it. I grew up in Chester County, PA, even though I am no longer there. My friend and I visited Longwood Gardens at least once or twice a month many years ago before there was a charge for it. Such a beautiful place. I couldn't wait to download this photo. Thank you so much for the picture and for the memories it has brought back.
