Album Info:
This quilt made by Bernie was based on a pattern by Eleanor Burns of Quilt in a Day fame. Bernie has his doubts about the Quilt in a Day idea as he began this adventure in the winter of 2004/2005. He assembled the top using his 1906 Singer 27K hand crank. He hand basted it and then boxed and shelved it due to all of the necessary preparations to sell their home in Los Banos and make the move to Grass Valley. During March and April of this year, Bernie completed the quilt using his newly electrified 1924 Singer 31-20. He says it was "newly electrified" because the machine was originally sold in San Francisco in August of 1924. He acquired the machine in 2004 and converted it to use as a treadle operated machine in 2007 after locating the 16" lower band wheel and pitman to complete its original incomplete treadle stand. The treadle stand itself was made for a wooden pitman although the band wheel came with a steel pitman. Using his Bernie fabricating magic, he designed and fabricated a combination wood/steel pitman to complete the assembly. In February 2011, he fabricated a custom made motor mount bracket of his own design in order to attach a Viking sewing motor in order to make the machine fully convertible to either treadle or electric. This is the first quilt that Bernie has sewn all by himself.

This quilt is now located in a cabin just outside of Missoula, Montana. One of my wife's sisters saw my web shots photo of it and fell in love with it, telling me that the colors match her bedroom colors perfectly. What could I do... I packed it up and shipped it to her just before Christmas of 2011.
