The shrine was founded on this place in 1355. The famous chrysanthemum festival is organised annually by the Bunkyo Chrysanthemum Protection Society. The festival attracts entries of around 2,000 pots.About 300,000 visitors make the chrysanthemum pilgrimage during the month-long festival. The peak of the disply is traditionally on November 5, when judging takes place and prizes are awarded.
