The impurities visible in the "oil" under a microscope is slag and grit in about equal amounts. The bearing were completely imbedded with it and the crank is lightly scored, but certainly not 'ruined'. The white paint is lacquer-based and has captured pockets of this grit under it. It'll take some cleaning!
