To assure the tappet face is square with it's shank the tappet was held vertically in a V block and then mounted to the magnetic chuck of the surface grinder. Here .003 has been removed and another .002 is needed to clean the face. Evidently the shaft is ground after the face is turned. That's the only way the face could be out of square and still have turning marks.
