Musa basjoo is a hardy banana from Japan. The fruit is too seedy and fibrous to be palatable, but the foliage gives a tropical air to temperate gardens. It's reputed to be root-corm hardy to -20F. It doesn't get anywhere near that cold here, so I'm hopeful that it will reshoot next spring. August 2004
