As the Japanning heats it has a smell similar to fresh laid asphalt. Because of the odor, 2 additional items are recommended. An exhast fan in an open window nearby and a VERY understanding spouse! As the Japanning begins to cure during in the heat cycles, the odor will become weaker and less noticable.
