  • Ik wist niet eens dat die tuin nog bestond, dus bedankt voor je rondleiding. Hier in de buurt is een nieuw pretpark (nou nieuw: het is er alweer een jaar of zeven) waar ze ook geprobeerd hebben die tuin na te maken, compleet met dat groene bruggetje. Maar tot nu toe is er niet veel meer dan wat gele algen in het water te zien...

  • Giverny is een dorp en gemeente in het Franse departement Eure, regio Haute-Normandie. Het dorp ligt ca. 5 km ten zuidoosten van Vernon aan de samenvloeiing van de Seine en de Epte. Het oppervlak van de gemeente is 6,46 km² en het aantal inwoners bedraagt 524 (1999). Giverny is vooral bekend geworden als woonplaats van de impressionistische schilder Claude Monet. Monet woonde in Giverny van 1883 tot zijn dood in 1926. Hij schilderde er vooral zijn tuin; zijn schilderijen van de vijver met waterlelies en de Japanse brug behoren tot zijn bekendste werken. Het huis en de tuinen van Monet zijn gerestaureerd door de Fondation Claude Monet en zijn tegenwoordig een toeristische trekpleister. Dichtbij het huis van Monet ligt het Musée d'Art Américain. De kerk van Giverny is gewijd aan Sainte Radegonde en heeft een koor uit de 11e eeuw. Op het bijbehorende kerkhof zijn enkele leden van de familie Monet, waaronder de schilder zelf, begraven.

El pueblo continuo siendo una pequeña comunidad rural de escasa poblacion, teniendo alrededor de 300 habitantes cuando llamo la atencion de Claude Monet en 1883, quien trasladaria alli su lugar de residencia. En un principio, arrendo una casa y sus terrenos adyacentes a un terrateniente local. Mas tarde, en 1890, una mejor situacion economica le permitiria comprar la casa y construir los impresionantes jardines que deseaba pintar. El jardin seria el escenario de muchas de sus obras mas trascendentes, como los Nenufares o el estanque de las ninfeas y el puente japones. El maestro impresionista vivio en Giverny desde 1883 hasta su muerte en 1926. Tanto el como muchos de sus familiares estan enterrados en el cementerio local. Su llegada transformo el lugar en un punto de referencia para los artistas de esta escuela: Cezanne, Renoir, Sisley, Pissarro, Matisse y John Singer Sargent lo visitaron, como tambien Georges Clemenceau, amigo de Monet. En 1980, a raiz de la restauracion de la casa y el jardin de Monet, y de su apertura al publico, la ciudad viviria un boom turistico. Los visitantes abundan mas en verano, estacion en la que las flores del jardin estan floreciendo.

  • Giverny sits on the "right Bank" of the River Seine. The village lies 80km (50 miles) from Paris, west and slightly north, on the border between the province of Normandy and the Île-de-France. A settlement has existed in Giverny since neolithic times and a monument uncovered attests to this fact. The village has remained a small rural setting with a modest population (numbering around 300 in 1883 when Monet discovered it) and has since seen a boom in tourism since the restoration of Monet's house and gardens. Claude Monet noticed the village of Giverny while looking out the window of a train he was riding. He made up his mind to move there and rented a house and the area surrounding it. In 1890 he had enough money to buy the house and land outright and set out to create the magnificent gardens he wanted to paint. Some of his most famous paintings, such as his water lily and Japanese bridge paintings, were of his garden in Giverny. Monet lived in Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926. He and many members of his family are buried in the village cemetery. Monet's house and gardens were opened to public visit in 1980, following restoration work. They have become a popular tourist attraction (the Fondation Claude Monet), particularly in the summer when the flowers are in bloom. The other main attraction of the village is the American Art Museum.
