Every year the festive day of March 1 brings back to us renewed hopes, confidence, faith in good fortune and a prosperous life. It is life, spring and the shining sun which win the battle against chilly weather, overcast skies and the nasty days of the Babe (the first 9 days in March). This triumph of rebirth and regeneration could not be better embodied but in the Martisor ( a trinket, March amulet) offered to loved ones in early spring. The white and red thread of this amulet (a coin, money cowrie) which parents customarily tied around their children's wrist, young men offered to young women, and young women used to exchange among themselves was believed to bring good luck and good health. It's an ancient tradition. It were find out in archaeological sites. As you seen in this album, the little miniatures are various. For sasho129, it's a romanian too old tradition, and "martisor" means "little March", from "martie" = March, in romanian.

Hi Gabriela! Congratulations for your featured album "MARTISOR - A Romanian Tradition"! Your album is great, no doubt, and I like it very much. Thank you for sharing! But this is not the only reason for me to write this message. The other reason is that we in Bulgaria have the same tradition. We call these things "MARTENITCI" by the name of the month March - "MART" in Bulgarian. They look like slightly different in comparison to yours but the red and white thread are obligatory. Here we tie them on the branches of the tree in blossom when the astronomic spring comes. What do you make with the MARTISORs? I see that you have a lot of albums. Hello Gabriela. I almost missed you being featured, as I don't always find the time to get to the homepage these days. So pleased I called in this morning. What a lovely and fascinating tradition. Beautiful captures to boot. Spring can't come quick enough for me. Although we got snow in February, which came as a pleasnt surprise as it is quite rare for us here in England to get snow at all, I am so looking forward to warmer weather.
