Album Description:
East Anglia in UK has a lot of these, but they are spread out. Alot of what are called windmills are actually windpumps, used to raise water from low lying areas into rivers that flow to the sea.

Eric, this is a fine example of how one can take an ubquitous object of Europe and make a poetic anthology of pictures. You have certainly travelled around to capture many avatars of the windmill limited only by the craftsman capabilities. I enjoyed the album replete with splendid photographs. Best wishes, Suresh

The Bircham windmill is clearly visible on the satellite photo from Google Maps.

Eric, What an interesting, entertaining, and informative album. It has taken me into an unexpected journey this morning. I lived in Bicester in the Cotswalds 1978-1980 and do not recall seeing any such windmills. I guess my eyes were full of manor houses, castles, and ancient stones. We lived very near Chesterton, but do not recall seeing the Chesterton windmill that you picture. Are you aware of Google Maps? The photography of the UK has been remarkably improved and I have been searching the satellite photography to find the Chesterton windmill. So far it escapes me. Thanks for a very remarkable album of windmills. Gary Ramthun Thornton (north Denver Colorado)

Hi Eric! I see what you mean with the mills in the UK being differnt from the ones here in The Netherlands. On the other hand, the ones in Holton and Sutton look to be of the typical architecture :-) . Anyhow, thanks for stopping by and for your kind comments on my albums. ~Sven

Hi Eric, great collection of photos of these magnificent machines they are a great passion of mine. I have spent many hours visiting and researching the history of the British windmill. In fact they played a significant part in my research and thesis for my degree 4 years ago. Any way thanks for sharing this fantastic work, Paul.

Greetings from Western Michigan Eric. This album is beautiful - such a variety of interesting mills and wind machines. I live very close to a working windmill called De Zwaan, brought over from the Neytherlands. I especially like your photo of the Cley Windmill at sunset - just gorgeous! - Best regards, DeeAnne :)

Hi Eric, i was going to say that i had been to a windmill that you haven't got here but you beat me to it & found out for yourself!LOL Really enjoyed Wicken & will certainly return on another sunny day. The Fens on a gloomy day hold no appeal for me! :0)Off to look at some of your recent albums now. Angela

Hi Eric, I've really enjoyed your photos of windmills. I particularly like #22 - very interesting. My town in Illinois used to be one of the major windmill manufacturing centers in the US, and there are still a few around town. We have a small one in our backyard. A belated thank you for your kind comments on our featured album of scenic shores. We have been away for a few weeks and were pleased to come home to so many nice messages. Greetings from Chicago, Marisa

Hi Eric, Thank you so much for your kind comments on my featured album. I do like the silhouette picture you have at the first of this album, maybe because it is a litte different that the rest of the pictures. You have a fine album here, it would be interesting to see how the inside of the windmills look that have been converted to living areas. Cynthia

Hi Eric, thanks for your nice message nearly 3 weeks ago. You are very kind. I am waiting for your new tree albums. But meanwhile I found this new edited album. How many Windmills in old UK!!!! But maybe it is just wrong to relate windmills to Holland and neighbors! Even here in Israel we have a windmill, a very famous one in our history. So famous that it is even printed on our money. Some month ago, when I was in Jerusalem, I got up very early to take pictures of it, but I went into the wrong direction. :-) Have a nice weekend up there in the cold corner! - Galit from Israel

Hi Eric! Thanks for the comments in my GB for "Only Roses". They thrive fairly well in very large pots if they are fed obscene amounts of fertilizer, & even then they are prone to blackspot & mildew. But I keep trying. My soil is extensive clay...which is why I keep on with the pots! I do like this album,& find it most interesting. We don't think of Britain as a place for windmills: I don't know why!Good views of a difficult subject, I think. All the best...Nancy.

Hi Eric! Great to hear from you again and I see you are well into your second Site too. This is such an interesting collection of Windmills and I am pleased you have documented them as they are now becoming so rare. That first shot is certainly very effective, well done! Pleased you enjoyed my Goldfields Safari (2 more albums to come), but sorry you have not managed that elusive trip to Australia yet... Best wishes.. Gladys, Western Australia.

Hello Eric, I have just returned from Cyprus, and found all these new albums of yours, you obviously have sorted your credit card problem out, would you believe I have been collecting windmils for an album to come, but good luck to you for beating me to it. Great selection and a wonderful subject, I have found just travelling to them and getting a picture is half the fun. Thanks for your comments on my Nelson theme, it is a wonder that you have not done one it was his birthday yesterday 29th Sept. an old seadog like you I am sure would have known, I will catch up with all your albums in the near future so in the meantime take care Ken

Hi Eric. I am so happy to be the first to sign your guestbook. That's some collection you have of 'Windmills, Watermills & Wundpumps'. I thought you'd been on holiday to Holland. Didn't realize we had so many. The one that caught my eye was the 'Chesterton Windmill'. That looks pretty unique to me. Glad to hear you're sorted at last and have now been upgraded. Do you have to pay two annual subscriptions now you have a second site. Hope you are well. Best wishes, Jayne xx
